Acupuncture for Insomnia & Sleep Problems

Sleep is one of the foundations of good health. My approach is to understand your individual sleep pattern and consider it within the broader context of your physical and emotional health.

What I Commonly Work With

  • Difficulty falling asleep
  • Waking repeatedly during the night
  • Waking too early
  • Restless or disrupted sleep
  • Feeling unrefreshed after sleep
  • Sleep difficulties associated with stress or anxiety
  • Sleep problems associated with hormonal changes
  • Sleep disruption occurring alongside chronic pain or other health concerns

Understanding Your Individual Symptoms

Sleep problems can have very different patterns. During your assessment, I may want to understand what time you normally go to bed and wake.

Looking at the Broader Picture

Sleep doesn't exist in isolation, poor sleep may occur alongside stress or anxiety, pain, headaches, digestive problems, hormonal changes or emotional strain.

The Traditional Chinese Medicine Perspective

Traditional Chinese Medicine has a long history of considering sleep as part of the body's overall pattern and balance.

What Might Treatment Involve?

Acupuncture is the foundation of my treatment. Depending on your individual presentation, I may draw from different acupuncture approaches and complementary therapies.

How Many Treatments Might I Need?

There is no standard number of treatments. Your treatment plan depends on the nature and duration of your sleep difficulties and how you respond to care.

When Should Sleep Problems Be Medically Evaluated?

Medical evaluation may be appropriate if you experience persistent insomnia that significantly affects your daily functioning, loud snoring or episodes of breathing interruption during sleep, excessive daytime sleepiness, or unusual movements or behaviors during sleep. If you're taking prescription sleep medication, please let me know during your consultation. Acupuncture should complement, not replace, appropriate medical evaluation and care.

Could Acupuncture Be Appropriate for Your Sleep Problems?

If difficulty sleeping is affecting your energy, concentration, mood, recovery or everyday life, acupuncture may be worth exploring as part of your overall approach to care. You're also welcome to contact Richard directly.
