FAQ
Choosing a healthcare practitioner is an important decision, and it's natural to have questions before beginning treatment. I've created this guide to answer the questions I hear most often from patients. If you don't find the information you're looking for, please don't hesitate to get in touch.
Part I – Understanding Acupuncture
What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is one of the oldest continuously practiced systems of medicine in the world. Treatment involves the gentle insertion of very fine, sterile, single-use needles into carefully selected points on the body.
How is Traditional Chinese Medicine different from conventional medicine?
Conventional medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine share the same goal: improving your health and well-being, but they often approach that goal from different perspectives. For many patients, these two approaches complement one another.
Does acupuncture hurt?
The needles used in acupuncture are extremely fine, many times thinner than those used for injections or blood tests. Most people experience little or no discomfort during insertion.
Is acupuncture safe?
Yes. When performed by a properly trained practitioner using sterile, single-use disposable needles, acupuncture has a strong safety record.
What conditions do you commonly treat?
I commonly work with patients seeking support for neck, shoulder and back pain, sciatica, headaches and migraines, stress, anxiety and burnout, sleep difficulties, digestive disorders, allergies and asthma, women's health concerns, and fatigue.
Part II – Your First Appointment
What happens during my first appointment?
Your first appointment begins with a comprehensive consultation where we discuss your current symptoms, medical history, lifestyle, sleep, digestion and stress levels. This is followed by a traditional assessment.
How many treatments will I need before I begin to feel better?
Every person responds to treatment in their own way. No healthcare practitioner can guarantee a particular outcome, but every treatment is carefully tailored to give you the best possible opportunity for meaningful improvement.
Should I eat before my treatment?
Yes. I generally recommend eating a light meal or snack before your appointment.
Will I need to remove my clothing?
Usually not. Many acupuncture points are located on the arms, legs, hands, feet, head, neck or back.
Are there any side effects?
Most people tolerate acupuncture very well, and serious side effects are uncommon.
